Sometimes called literary journalism or the literature of fact, creative nonfiction merges the boundaries between literary art fiction, poetry and research nonfiction statistical, fact-filled, run of the mill journalism.
The literature of reality, with all of the pain and the secrets that authors confess, is helping to connect the nation and the world in a meaningful and intimate way. At the same time, successful creative nonfiction attempts to overlay fact with traditional conceptions of dramatic structure.
What kinds of stylistic devices is Sedaris using that would make this a piece of creative non-fiction?
Another important aspect of literary journalism is that it often stretches the idea of "objective facts" in order to better reflect real life and real people. These writers, such as Tom Wolfe and Joan Didion, were interested in bringing the presence of an individual awareness to the work, acknowledging that the writer is incapable of complete subjectivity and is constantly interpreting what he or she observes.
When writing a personal essay, it is important to remember that the main character is you.
Everything in a piece of creative writing is subject to scrutiny, including word choice. Public events were considered historical, while private life was seen as inappropriate to the written word, unless you were a person considered of singular historical importance—Winston Churchill, or a Kennedy, for instance.
Imagery also helps with this and ties back into showing v. However, it is this vulnerability that fuels the personal essay.
It is a great example of memoir. Any writer or reader will find it indispensable and, frankly, inspiring. There are no limits to the subject matter as long as it is expressed in a story-oriented narrative way.

I prefer the word actual because it refers to simple actuality. Try to think of the form as a part of the writing itself, not just a framework for it: Why is it organized in this way?
It is the mix of all these elements that make creative nonfiction an illuminating and moving form of historical documentary, as well as lovely literature. A memoir does not have to be a long, all-inclusive cataloguing of your life-that could be overwhelming, boring, and read more like a formal autobiographychoose a specific focus.
Although there have been instances of traditional and literary journalists falsifying their stories, the ethics applied to creative nonfiction are the same as those that apply to journalism.
Your character in the story can only develop if you claim the story as your own. What about this piece separates it from more traditional journalism? You can make it read like fiction, and you can make conscious decisions to surround your work with ambiguity that questions the nature of truth vs.
It can be hard to feel like it is your place to expose personal parts of others without their permission for the sake of your piece. Dialogue between characters not only helps the reader to understand the relationships, it helps the reader to understand the individual characters and their actions.
